Badu Island Sewerage Reticulation Scheme
About the project
Empower was contracted by the Torres Strait Island Regional Council for the extension of Badu Island’s existing sewerage reticulation scheme and the construction of two new pump stations, with particular attention to durability and whole of life costs.
Scope
Empower provided the detailed design, documentation preparation, community and stakeholder liaison (including with Traditional Owners), finalisation of Native Title issues, tender review/assessment/award, construction superintendence and certification for the project.
Outcomes
Challenges were identified during construction with the discovery of very hard rock, which was not found by geotechnical testing. To overcome this, Empower delivered an improved design with quick turnaround, particularly considering the island’s remote location.
Genuine working relationships were developed with key stakeholders and the Badu Island Prescribed Body Corporate, which led to a deeper understanding of sensitive cultural and Native Title issues relative to the project.
